San Jose Trump rally attendees sue San Jose Mayor and police chief for enabling violent attacks against them, for forcing defenseless ralliers to walk a particular route lined by violent mob waiting for them after the rally-Santa Cruz Sentinel

This article doesn't mention that the plaintiff's attorney was also present and a witness to the violent attacks in San Jose after the 6/2/16 Trump rally. The article invites readers to believe the attorney is politically motivated by identifying her only as, "the plaintiff's attorney, Harmeet K. Dhillon, who is also the vice chair of the California Republican Party.

"Fourteen people who attended a Donald Trump rally in San Jose last month filed a class-action lawsuit Thursday against the city, mayor and police chief claiming city leaders failed to protect them from assaults by protesters as they left the event and violated their rights to free speech and peaceful assembly.

“Law-abiding citizens leaving the Trump rally were victimized by being forced by armed police to walk into a riot in full swing where many were assaulted while police looked on, said the plaintiffs’ attorney, Harmeet K. Dhillon, who is also the vice chair of the California Republican Party.

Dhillon says her clients range from a 14-year-old who was assaulted by two different individuals and denied assistance by the San Jose Fire Department to a 71-year-old woman whose glasses were ripped off and destroyed by three rioters. She said it was made clear that the “inaction” of 250 San Jose police officers “was colored by political viewpoint considerations.”
..........
Following the violence at the June 2 rally, Mayor Sam Liccardo said in a statement: “While it’s a sad statement about our political discourse that Mr. Trump has focused on stirring antagonism instead of offering real solutions to our nation’s challenges, there is absolutely no place for violence against people who are simply exercising their rights to participate in the political process.” That and remarks to a reporter that Trump “needs to take responsibility for the irresponsible behavior of his campaign” drew criticism that the mayor was excusing the attacks.

Liccardo, a backer of Hillary Clinton, also was accused of ordering officers to stand down as Trump supporters were being attacked, a claim Police Chief Eddie Garcia has called “absurd.” Liccardo, he added, called him the night of the rally, but didn’t tell him how to handle the event....
......
San Jose police have since arrested 20 people for alleged assaults and vandalism outside the rally. They’re looking for two more identified suspects. They were 24 reported victims.

Liccardo was not immediately available Wednesday for comment on the lawsuit.
..........
Dhillon said her clients shouldn’t have felt their lives were at risk during a political event, or that their rights are “somehow less important just because they happen to be different than those of the mayor and/or the chief of police.”
.......
The plaintiffs are seeking compensation and injunctive relief for injuries they suffered during the rally and for alleged violations of their constitutional rights.
......
City Attorney Rick Doyle said Thursday the city hasn’t yet been served with the lawsuit. “I really can’t comment until we have a chance to review it,” Doyle said. “But from what I know, the police did everything they could.”
......
The lawsuit also named a handful of individual rioters and 38 unknown rioters, who are being called “Doe” defendants."

"During last week’s melee following a San Jose Donald Trump rally, police appeared to be more of a hindrance than they were a help when Trump supporters were chased and pummeled by protesters.

The father of a 14-year-old boy who also attended the rally told Fox News host Sean Hannity that his son was beaten on the back of his head as he was running for his life.

“He had two big limps on his head at the end of the night,” the father, identified only as “Craig” told Hannity.

He added that after his son was attacked, he managed to make it to the police line, but the officers wouldn’t allow him to check on his son.

“I tried to check on his well-being, and they wouldn’t let me through,” he said. “I kept saying, ‘That’s my son! That’s my son!’ and the guy just said, “Get back! Get back!’”

Harmeet Dhillon, a lawyer who also attended the rally, confirmed Craig’s recollection of events.

There are 250 police officers lined up there. They stayed in formation and didn’t do a thing to help all the people who were being attacked, she told Hannity.

Dhillon represents Trump supporter Rachel Casey, who was cornered by a mob of protesters at the entrance to a Marriott hotel and pelted with eggs.

She was very frightened for her life,” Dhillon said. “She tried to get into the Marriott and they closed the doors from the inside.”

Both Craig and Dhillon related that police directed the Trump supporters to walk through the mob of protesters.

“We were directed through the mob,” Craig told Hannity. “It’s one thing to let people protest. It’s another thing to make the people go through the protest. Force them to. We weren’t allowed to go away from the protest.

Dhillon agreed. “I’ve heard anecdotally from people who have spoken to police officers,” she said.Right before we were directed into this mob this group of Trump supporters was thanking the police for being there. This is a generally pro-law enforcement crowd. It’s not a knock on police in general but in this specific instance it’s shocking to see 250 of them lined up and not lifting a finger to help hundreds of victims.”"...

It didn't occur to Trump supporters not to obey San Jose police who ordered them to walk into a violent mob: "We were directed through the mob...We weren’t allowed to go away from the protest.Lawyer Harmeet Dhillon says this is a civil rights violation, that San Jose police participated in denying citizens a right to free assembly and free speech, at 4:15 on video. 6/2/16, San Jose, Ca.

The plainclothes officers said they did not intervene for fear their own safety would be jeopardized as the estimated 400 protesters developed a "mob mentality."

The officers' observations were included in the arrest report of Antonio Moses Fernandez, 19, of San Jose, who is accused of throwing a metal barrier into a police skirmish line following the Trump rally June 2 outside the San Jose Convention Center. Fernandez made his first court appearance Tuesday and was charged with felony assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer, according to court documents."...
